As a mother of two young children, we are always on the move—whether it’s a trip to the park, the beach, a play date, or a long car ride. Early on I learned that running out of snacks can turn a great day into a difficult one. Because both of my kids follow restricted diets, I can’t rely on finding gluten-free and dairy-free options while we’re out, so I keep a selection of dependable snacks in my bag at all times.
Even when convenience is key, I try to choose snacks that are nutritious. Foods high in sugar cause quick energy spikes followed by crashes, and then my kids are hungry again within half an hour. With that in mind, I focus on portable options that provide lasting energy and are easy to eat on the go.
Below are the five gluten-free, on-the-go snacks we reach for most often. They’re simple to pack, satisfy my kids, and help us stay prepared for whatever the day brings.
Best Gluten Free On-the-go Snacks

- Barney Butter Snack Packs – These almond butter snack packs are certified gluten free, Non-GMO Project verified, vegan, and peanut-free. They’re low in sugar, provide 3–4 grams of protein per pack, and come in seven flavors so you can rotate varieties: Smooth, Honey + Flax, Vanilla + Espresso, Bare Smooth (no added sugar or salt), Cocoa + Coconut, Crunchy, and Raw + Chia. My kids especially like Cocoa + Coconut, Smooth, and Honey + Flax. They’re compact, shelf-stable, and easy to slip into a purse or diaper bag. While they pair well with apple slices, my kids often enjoy them straight from the pouch.
- EnviroKidz Strawberry Granola Bars – These whole-grain granola bars are made in a gluten-free, peanut-free facility and are organic, Non-GMO Project verified, and vegan. Each bar is low in sodium and sugar and contains about 2 grams of protein. We prefer the strawberry flavor for travel because it’s less likely to melt in warm weather than chocolate varieties, and my kids always enjoy them.
- Stretch Island Fruit Leather – Made from a quarter cup of real fruit per strip and containing no added sugar, these fruit leathers satisfy sweet cravings without unnecessary ingredients. They’re Non-GMO Project verified and vegan, and the flavors—apple, apricot, cherry, grape, raspberry, and strawberry—are all kid-approved. My children couldn’t pick a single favorite, which says a lot about how well they taste.
- Sahale Pomegranate Vanilla Flavored Cashews – Sahale’s nut and fruit mixes are flavorful and convenient. The pomegranate vanilla cashews are certified gluten free, Non-GMO Project verified, low in sugar, and provide about 4 grams of protein per serving. They’re a favorite in our house, available in Grab & Go sizes for easy portability. If you bring them along, you might want to hide and ration them at home like I do!
- Fresh Blueberries – Fresh berries are a simple, nutritious snack that travels well. Blueberries taste great at room temperature and require no slicing—just a quick rinse and they’re ready. Stored in an airtight container, they stay fine in a bag for hours and my kids treat them like candy. Blueberries are an easy way to add antioxidants and natural sweetness to any trip.
Those are our go-to gluten-free on-the-go snacks. They’re practical, kid-friendly, and keep us ready for anything the day brings. I appreciate the support of the gluten-free community, and I’d love to hear about your favorite portable snacks—feel free to share suggestions in the comments.
