It’s like deglazing a pan, but amplified.

Deglazing uses liquid to dissolve fond (the browned bits left after cooking) and make a sauce. This method—think “mega deglaze”—uses water and heat to break down stuck-on food across a whole pan. Start this trick while you finish other cleanup tasks, and by the time you’re ready to wash, the pan will practically clean itself.

Materials

  • About 1/2 to 2 cups Water
    Use enough to cover the bottom of the pan and the stuck-on food.

Instructions

  1. Place the dirty or burnt pan on a heat source (stovetop, grill, or similar).
  2. Pour in enough water to cover the bottom and the areas with burned-on food.
  3. Bring the water to a boil and let it simmer or boil for about 5–10 minutes to soften the residue.
  4. While the water is hot, use a spatula to scrape and loosen the gunk. Use a metal spatula for stainless or cast iron and a plastic or silicone spatula for non-stick surfaces. Continue until most of the residue is dislodged.
  5. Carefully pour out the water — most of the burned bits should come away with it.
  6. Let the pan cool enough to handle, then wash as usual with minimal scrubbing.
