Baked Potatoes

Baked potatoes are inexpensive and easy to prepare. They work well for a quick weeknight meal or alongside grilled steak on a weekend. While you can microwave a potato in ten minutes, oven-roasting delivers a deeper flavor, a crisp exterior and a silky interior that simply melts in your mouth.

Preparation takes just a few steps before the oven does the work. Once they’re roasting you can move on to the rest of your meal without watching them constantly.

How to Roast Potatoes in the Oven

Start by scrubbing medium-sized russet potatoes until clean. Choose potatoes of similar size so they cook evenly.

Dry the potatoes thoroughly with paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth. Rub each potato with a little olive oil, place them on a baking sheet and sprinkle with sea salt.

How long to bake a potato

Bake at 400ºF for 40–60 minutes, depending on potato size. They are done when a fork slides easily into the center.

Roasting in the oven enhances flavor and texture, producing consistent, delicious results. If you have extra, roasted potatoes are excellent for other dishes—use leftovers in breakfast hash, twice-baked potatoes, breakfast burritos or as a topping for shepherd’s pie.

Oven-roasted potatoes are also perfect for a baked potato bar. Offer a selection of toppings such as broccoli and cheese, sour cream and chives, chili and shredded cheese to turn a simple potato into a complete meal.

What Kind of Potatoes Are Best for Baking

Most potatoes roast well, but russets are my top choice when serving baked potatoes because of their fluffy interior. Yukon Golds and red potatoes also work—just adjust the cooking time for smaller sizes.
