Apple Fritter Waffle Donuts Recipe: Crisp, Cinnamon-Glazed Treats

The trend of mashups in the food world shows no signs of stopping, and the wonut — a delightful waffle-donut hybrid — is a perfect example. Think of a waffle’s crisp texture combined with the indulgent flavor of a fried donut: the result is irresistible.

I’ve made simple waffle donuts with a classic glaze before, but I wanted to push the idea further. Apple fritter wonuts are one of my favorites — rich with cinnamon and apple, crisped in hot oil, then finished with a sweet glaze. If you prefer to skip frying, the batter also makes excellent waffles on its own.

Apple fritter is my go-to donut flavor, so turning that batter into waffle-shaped donuts felt like a natural and fun experiment. Below you’ll find the ingredient list and clear instructions to make your own apple fritter waffle donuts at home.

Ingredients

Donuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chopped apples, peels removed
  • Oil for frying

Glaze:

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Fold in the chopped apples, stirring only until they’re distributed throughout the batter.
  • Preheat your waffle iron and cook the batter according to the manufacturer’s directions until golden. Allow the waffles to cool slightly, then cut them into sections suitable for frying.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or a heavy pot to a suitable frying temperature. Fry two waffle sections at a time until golden brown, about one minute per side. Remove with tongs or a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  • For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip the hot waffle donuts into the glaze, place them on a wire rack, and let the glaze set for about 20 minutes before serving.
