Tissue Paper Pumpkin Treat Bags for Fall Parties

These Halloween party favor goody bags are fun, inexpensive, and easy to make—ideal for school parties or any fall-themed gathering. Simple tissue-paper pumpkins can be filled with candy or small toys to create a charming, handheld favor that guests will love.

They also work well for Thanksgiving if you skip the googly eyes. For variety, try mixing several shades of orange and yellow tissue paper for a more dimensional, autumnal look.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fold the tissue paper in half, then fold in half again to form a square. Layering the tissue adds strength since the paper is delicate.
  2. Open the folded square and place a small pile of candy in the center. About 12–16 fun-size pieces worked well in my tests, but adjust based on the candy or small toys you’re using.
  3. Gather the tissue paper sides up around the candy to form a round little bag. Shift the contents as needed to make the shape even.
  4. Twist a pipe cleaner around the gathered paper to secure the bag, leaving a few inches of pipe cleaner extending for the stem and curl.
  5. Wrap floral tape around the base of the stem and pipe cleaner to cover the twist and help the pumpkin hold its shape. Leave the remaining pipe cleaner free to curl.
  6. Use a pencil or similar round tool to curl the free end of the pipe cleaner into a tendril.
  7. Optionally add googly eyes or other embellishments, and your pumpkin favor is ready.

HELPFUL TIPS

  1. To stretch a pack of tissue paper further, try cutting each sheet in half and folding once instead of twice. This can double the number of pumpkins per pack, though they may be slightly less sturdy.
  2. Substitutions work—washi tape or green painter’s tape can replace floral tape, and ribbon or floral wire can be used instead of pipe cleaners. Experiment to find the combination that looks and feels best to you.
